Eradicating Slavery: Achieving Justice One Conviction at a Time
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.
Proverbs 31:8
The Project
Modern slavery is dragging millions around the globe into an abyss of misery and degradation, being the second most profitable illegal industry after drugs. Yearly, over 400 million children are exposed to sexual exploitation and abuse, leading to physical and emotional damage.
Since its inception in August 2017, International Needs has partnered with Chab Dai’s Legal Support Project (LSP), fighting to abolish slavery by prosecuting suspected traffickers and helping victims through rehabilitation and resettlement.
Objectives
- To provide legal support and ensure justice for victims of human trafficking, child sexual abuse, and child marriage in Cambodia.
- To educate law enforcement and judicial officers on their duties and obligations to investigate human trafficking cases.
- To foster collaboration among legal professionals and organizations to improve legal support services for victims.
With the help of supporters, the Chab Dai Legal team have provided consultation to victims and their families, secured convictions related to forced marriage and human trafficking, increased awareness and education among law enforcement officers about their roles in human trafficking investigations.
Impact
In 2023, the Chab Dai Legal Support Project addressed 35 new cases, providing essential legal support to victims. Legal consultations were extended to 63 victims and their families, leading to 29 convictions with sentences ranging from 5 to 20 years. The project also significantly raised awareness and education among law enforcement officers regarding their roles in human trafficking investigations.
Annually we need to raise $40,000 to help and equip the work of Chab Dai. With your generous support, more survivors can receive legal and restoration aid.
Bopha’s story of restoration
Bopha, a 12-year-old girl from Kampong Chhnang province, Cambodia, began living with her grandmother at 1.5 years old when her mother had to work in Phnom Penh. At 2.5 years old, neighbours asked to adopt her, and her grandmother agreed, as she had other grandchildren to care for.
Bopha was sexually abused multiple times by her neighbours, the foster care father and his son. On July 26, 2022, Bopha sought refuge with her mother, and they filed a complaint with the local police. The police referred them to the Chab Dai Coalition for social and legal support. The Legal Support Team’s (LSP) lawyers provided legal consultation and defended her case in court. Both suspects were trialled and subsequently sentenced to 8 and 10 years of imprisonment.
Bopha has been referred to live with the Chab Dai member organization shelter in Siem Reap to continue her studies and begin the journey of restoration.
Donate today and help provide legal support to victims of this heinous crime.
Our goal for this year is to raise $40,000 to continue supporting the work of Chab Dai. By supporting International Needs, you can make a practical impact in changing the lives of victims of human trafficking, sexual abuse, and child marriage.
