The Project
In the informal settlements of Fiji, many mothers face significant social and economic disadvantages. With low education and skills, they struggle in the job market. Some receive minimal allowances from partners, which affects their children’s education and prospects, leading to a cycle of disadvantage. The Fiji Moms Project, implemented by International Needs Fiji, aims to equip these women with the skills, resources, and financial support necessary to become financially independent.
Objectives
- To equip mothers in informal settlements with the skills, resources, and financial support needed to achieve financial and economic independence.
- To break the cycle of disadvantage by empowering mothers, thereby improving their children’s educational and developmental outcomes.
- To foster a supportive community environment through vocational training and social integration programs.
With the help of supporters like you, the Fiji Moms Project in Suva, Fiji, has created a 20-week vocational training programs, where women receive training in cooking, sewing, baking, housekeeping, screen printing, and jewellery making. Additionally, the mothers attend classes on parenting, self-care, and sexual health.
Impact
The Fiji Moms Project delivered impactful results in 2022: 66% established businesses (14% working or caring for relatives), 86% met family needs, 94% developed livelihood skills, and 75% built life skills, self-esteem, and confidence. Through this project, young women in Fiji have become economically independent.
Annually we need to raise NZD 40,000 to continue empowering more women. With your generous support, more women can learn skills and become financially independent.
Mrs. Amanda Luxon visits Fiji Moms
In June 2024, we were honoured to welcome Mrs. Amanda Luxon, the Prime Minister’s wife, to visit the Fiji Moms Project. The project is supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and is a collaborative effort by INFiji and INHAT.
Her visit highlighted the importance of supporting initiatives that foster growth and resilience. We are grateful for her interest and support in our mission to create positive change.
