Sri Lanka Life-Giving Water and Strengthened Livelihoods
Providing clean water and sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable communities in Monaragala, Sri Lanka.
Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.
John 7:38
The Project
In remote areas of Monaragala, Sri Lanka, communities like Kadurugodagama, Fifth Mile Post and Mauragama rely on shallow, deteriorated wells for drinking water. Most residents are farmers dependent on increasingly shorter rainy seasons, limiting crop yield and income. Insufficient working capital forces reliance on exploitative loans for seed and fertilizer, trapping families in debt. Women face barriers to learning skills for non-farming income. Our project, in partnership with INHAT, INLK, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade New Zealand (MFAT), aims to address these issues, helping to mitigate some of the disadvantages faced by these communities.
Objectives
- To provide reliable supplies of safe drinking water for individual consumption.
- To provide reliable supplies of agricultural water to extend farming activities into the dry season.
- To provide training, agricultural inputs and social structures to boost agricultural productivity.
- To improve income generation prospects for women.
Starting in April 2025 and continuing over the next three years, INNZ, with the backing of NZ partners and in collaboration with INLK and MFAT, will install and rehabilitate tube wells for safe drinking water and dug wells for agriculture. Farmers will benefit from training and ongoing support to improve agricultural practices and social structures, while Self Help Groups will be established to enhance women’s income generation opportunities.
